While the Statue of Liberty may be green now, when it was first delivered in 1886 it was a striking shade of brown. Yes that most famous of green symbols is such because it is corroded. This wasn't exactly unexpected: people at the time knew that copper corroded to a light green. This was frequently used as pigments in paints. But seeing it here, underneath a bridge, what's really shocking is how much of the copper is still in its original striking brown.
