Native to the eastern Mediterranean, the Pistachio is also harvested
in large quantities in Central California. 170 million pounds are
harvested annually, enough to satisfy 95% of US consumption and still
export an equal portion to eastern Asia. California is second in world
Pistachio production only to Iran. The
California Pistachio Commission has apparently grown quite influential
under these conditions, and is an organization not to be taken lightly. |
